Netflix Popular no one wants this That’s quite a misnomer; it’s the show ~everyone~ wants, and Netflix is taking notice, because a second season is already on the way! This feel-good romantic comedy ticks all the boxes for a show worth watching. It stars the ever-likeable Kristen Bell as an agnostic sex podcast host and producer, and the mesmerizing Adam Brody as a newly single rabbi— —Yes, this is the millennial mom’s dream match.
However, there is a third protagonist worth noting: Los Angeles. City of Angels is front and center, taking viewers on a tour of Los Angeles for a true Angeleno experience. This is the first character we meet at the beginning of the series. “My version of Los Angeles” A line from Haim’s “Summer Girls”, Play quick shots of locations like Echo Park Lake and the Los Feliz 3 Theater. Scary Mom spoke to the show’s location manager Derek Alvarado, who gave us the scoop behind the locations used in season one.
Alvarado said the show’s creator, Erin Foster, wrote the locations as suggestions in the script, which gave him the freedom to scout parts of the city in search of specific venues to pitch the show’s creators and director. Our goal was to shoot somewhere where the characters felt real, rather than in a touristy city spot. “We traveled back and forth a lot between Vermont and Hillhurst,” Alvarado shared of scouting locations along these major thoroughfares in Los Feliz.
The 10-episode series began filming in January of this year, and unlike many other half-hour comedies, it was shot entirely on location (meaning no sets were built on a soundstage). You can see the Los Feliz restaurant’s sign in the show’s opening scene as Joanne experiences a disastrous first date. We return to the restaurant in the final episode, when Joanne considers converting to Judaism while having brunch with her best friends. Featuring two bars on two floors, this Mexican restaurant and bar is perfect for weekend brunch or dinner, perfect for a drink-free good time.

Alvarado told us the restaurant was written into the pilot script as a suggestion, but ended up being a suitable location for filming. After an awkward but hilarious car scene in episode two, Noah and Joanne take their siblings on their first official date here.
Unfortunately, the Silver Lake restaurant is closed, but you can get a similar botanical vibe at their sister locations in West Hollywood and Venice, The Butcher’s Daughter.
3. Pilates Eagle Rock

When not drinking cocktails, you’ll find LA ladies sweating and gossiping. Alvarado revealed that one of the show’s producers had worked out at the Pilates studio and suggested he check it out. In Episode 4, Joanne chats with friends while lamenting her efforts to stalk Noah’s ex on Insta.
4. Happy Treasure Box

While you won’t find the fictional Annihilator that Joanne searched for in Episode 4 here, you’ll find tons of other vibrators among the many different sex toys at this iconic West Hollywood sex shop. The shop has been in the town since 1980 and it’s probably the first thing locals think of when asked where they can add some spice to their bedrooms.
5. Mom’s Shelter

This popular rooftop spot atop this Hollywood hotel is where Noah met and hit it off with Joanne’s friends in Episode 7. Venue fare.
6. Los Angeles Third Base

In Episode 7, the Matzah Ballers head to this sports restaurant in Hollywood after their victory. Visitors to third base can come here for drinks, snacks or a sit-down meal. As an extra stop on the tour, in the next scene of the episode, Joanne FaceTimes with Morgan, who is wearing a “Casa Vega” shirt. This landmark Mexican restaurant in Sherman Oaks has been open since the 1950s and is popular with locals and Hollywood elite.
7. Village

8. Iguana Vintage Costume

Episode 6 begins with the sisters shopping at this vintage clothing store in Sherman Oaks. Joanne’s comment that “rich people have the best crap” rings true with some of the hidden gems you might find as you peruse the shelves here. Select collections include works spanning several decades, dating as far back as the 1920s. Top-down shots in the show also highlight a variety of colorful wigs.

In episode 6, Sasha visits his father, “the shvitz,” to discuss a promotion. “Shvitz” means “sweat” in Yiddish, and according to Alvarado, that’s what everyone was doing while filming the scene. “When we were shooting in the sauna, even though we had shut down the sauna two days earlier and had air conditioning in it, the temperature was still about 105 degrees when we were shooting in there… it was brutal,” he said . In addition to spending time in the sauna, spa visitors can enjoy a massage, a “European shower gel,” or jump into the icy cold water.

The couple’s weekday make-out session in Episode 10 takes place at this neighborhood park in central Will County, but if you want to try the bagels the two eat at Yeastie Boy’s truck, you can find their six all over the city One of the trucks (Joanne and Noah might go to Los Feliz to visit the one closest to Noah’s home in Eagle Rock). Our guess is that the good rabbi ordered the Lox Deluxe, so follow his lead, or order any of their stuffed bagel sandwiches.
