When I was a kid, there were few things I loved more than my bedroom. I am very lucky to have a safe home and a loving family, but my bedroom mine space. I can decorate it however I want, rearrange it to my liking, and fill it with my favorite things. It saddens me to see so many Instagram and TikTok influencers showing off their teenage bedrooms that look like they stepped straight out of a beige catalog. What happened to the posters on the walls and the bookshelves filled with little treasures? If you want to help your kids have the room of their dreams, I’ve got you covered with the perfect kid’s bedroom shopping list. These are inspirational ideas that are affordable, focus on what teens really want and need in a room, and best of all, they actually belong in one tweened bedroom.
Don’t worry; there’s not a mini-fridge or a vanity to store your skin-care products on this list. These are actual items I purchased for her bedroom, as well as items I know she and other kids will love. Most importantly, my kids just want their own space. She shares a room with her sister, which she loves, but needs her own place in the room, which means everything on this list would be perfect for teens who share a room or have smaller spaces. I specialize in simple fixes to help decorate a bedroom (you know, beyond paint or new furniture), and items that make them feel comfortable and loved.
So grab your tweens and start shopping. Let them have some say over some decor, but feel free to push back if they suggest painting the ceiling black or something else. After all, tweens are tweens, but they totally deserve a new set of fun sheets.
lava lamp
Oh yes, you read that right. My own child received a lava lamp for Christmas and she often tells me how it calms her down at night by watching the lava bounce. If your kids could use a little zen, consider using this rainbow-colored lava lamp in their room. It’s beautiful even when it’s not lit, but once it’s lit it’s mesmerizing.
comfortable pillow
For smaller bedrooms, you may not have room for inflatable furniture or a large, comfy bean bag, so grab a faux shearling bed rest pillow from Target. This is also a great option if your kids share a room, as the pillow can be placed on their bed without any siblings taking over. This sleeper pillow, in particular, is super soft yet padded to keep your back straight so it doesn’t tip over or lose its comfortable position. It’s perfect for reading, playing on your tablet, drawing, and more.
Lovely gift basket
Maybe if they had a cute basket they would actually put clothes in in it right? This ice cream cone gift basket from Pottery Barn Teen is so sturdy that you won’t find it peeling like some cheaper hamper versions. It’s also nearly 3 feet tall, so you know it can hold a lot of clothes. The lid of the ice cream spoon is cut higher than you think so it’s not too top-heavy and should stay nice and upright.
curtain light
I know everyone loves those rope lights, but let me introduce you to these gradient curtain lights that are softer, calmer, and easier to hang. You can hang them on the wall behind your child’s bed, in a corner of the room as a little hideaway, or even hang them from the ceiling if you like. The color is bright and pretty (but still nice and muted) and has such a lovely glow at night.
some interesting hooks
Hooks are a must-have for a tween bedroom. They can be used to hold bags, robes, jackets, or even medals for all their achievements. But the trick is to find cute ones, like this Star Wars Death Star wall hook , so they’ll be encouraged to actually use them. Even if you’re not sure yet what you want to hang, place a few of these around the room so you already have a place for whatever needs placing.
Perfect quote printing
Are there any Swifties for teenagers? Place a print of Taylor Swift’s “Just Be Yourself” quote in their room to create a gorgeous piece of art that reminds them how special they are. This is a really cute little inspiration, especially during those years when confidence is low.
The best little book lamp
Teens still need bedtime, but they may still want to read, write, or draw when you turn off all the lights and put them to bed. You never want to hinder creativity, so place this rechargeable book light in their room. We’ve had this particular product for a few years now, and it comes with a charge forever . We seriously only recharged it every few weeks. It also comes in several different brightness levels, and the clip-on mechanism is perfect for paperback and hardcover books or periodicals.
Easy-to-pair Bluetooth speaker
One thing my kids really enjoy is listening to music in the bath, which means we need a great Bluetooth speaker. This BolaButty Bluetooth speaker is affordable and super easy to pair—my kids were able to do it with zero help from me. It also flashes lights and has controls on top so parents can easily handle it. They can use it in their room, outside, in the bathroom, anywhere!
disco ball
Your kids can turn their bedroom into a legit party with this Luditek disco ball, which will be the cutest thing ever. This little guy can light up an entire room with bright colors, and with the remote, you can control how the light flashes, its color, and even how fast it spins. When it’s time to throw a family dance party, head to your child’s bedroom and fire it up.
An interesting set of sheets
Cute bedding is always a win in any bedroom, but for teenagers, I think you should really choose some cool sheets. This set of Minecraft glow-in-the-dark textured sheets is so fun that you can use any simple duvet or blanket on top to match them. No need to buy a full bedding set – just pick out a few sheets they like. I feel like the teenage years are when they really start to have opinions and ideas about their own rooms, and picking out sheets based on their own interests is a really fun bonding activity.
Memories bulletin board
Everyone needs a place to store their photos and hang their medals, and I love this linen bulletin board from Martha Stewart. It’s a nice, simple design, but a little taller than a standard cork board. It’s also large in size – 20 inches x 15 inches – and can accommodate plenty of items your child may want to display, from Polaroids to artwork to certificates.
glitter bedspread
Teenagers, especially those who share a bedroom, deserve a small space of their own where they feel comfortable, safe, and warm. That’s why this lighted bedspread is a perfect idea. This list has everything you need to create a little oasis in your child’s bedroom, whether you decide to use it on the bed or use another part of the room as a hideaway. The light is also nice and warm without being super bright, so it gives the whole room an amazing glow.
affirmative art
Being a teenager can be tough, and reminding your teen over and over again how special and important they are should be a priority. With these custom affirmation printables from Etsy, you can create the perfect poster to make your teen feel good and confident. There are some ready-made template ideas, but if you have an affirmation in mind, you can customize a poster with the seven affirmations for your child and even choose the color. It’s such a lovely thing to have in their room, maybe on their desk or bed (where they’ll see it often), so they always have that extra bit of comfort and inspiration.
toy hammock
Maybe as your kids enter their teenage years, they’ve cut back on their old collections—or maybe they have more of them than ever before. Either way, storage is a must, and this stuffed animal hammock is an adorable way to store and display their favorite cuddly friends. It’s particularly suitable for the Squishmallow range, and you can fit more in a hammock than you think. Weave some battery-operated lights on top to add a touch of whimsy.
Treasure basket hanging on the wall
Your kids may feel old, but they still have all the little treasures and things they love and want to keep. (Aren’t we?) That’s why this floral vine wall basket is a great idea for their room. You can use it to store all their belongings, from makeup and body spray to pens and pencils for journaling, or just all the little things they collect and need to store (like small toys). It’s so cute hanging on the wall, and any storage space that keeps things off the floor is a major win.
A teen’s bedroom should be their safe space, and with these items, they can feel free to express their personality and make it the safe haven they deserve.
