Many of the phrases you hear as a teenager have their origins in black culture, as well as black queer culture. Many mainstream popular terms are derived from African American Vernacular English (AAVE). Categorizing these terms solely as Gen Z or Alpha slang not only misrepresents their history, but also oversimplifies the way language evolves and develops. These words were not coined by today’s teenagers, but they have nonetheless become integrated into youth culture.
