Autumn leaf art activities for preschool

There is no need to tell children what to do or how to do it. Crafts are fun, but kids also need opportunities to create their own things. This invitation to create with autumn leaves provides a perfect opportunity to do just that.

In this open-ended autumn leaf activity, children will create with autumn leaves. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Let children choose how to use the materials put in front of them and what they will do. This gives them the opportunity to explore their creativity and practice using art materials.

• Mod Podge (optional)
• Foam brush (optional)

Preparing for autumn foliage activities

Step 1 – Seal autumn leaves (optional)
Use a foam brush to apply Mod Podge to the fall leaves. This will preserve and protect the leaf and help the tempera paint adhere to its surface.

Step 2 – Set invitation to create autumn leaf art
Place your fall leaves, tempera colors of choice, paint brushes, googly eyes, and glue on your work surface.

Invite children to create fall art activities

Dress your children in aprons or painting smocks and let them have fun creating fall leaf art. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. Just display the materials and let your child play and create whatever they want.

When reviewing your child’s work, focus on their effort and describe what you see rather than evaluating the artist or the result. Use phrases like “Wow, you worked really hard on this” or “I see a lot of red and yellow.” Stay away from comments like “You’re so talented” or “You’re such a good artist.” The former will inspire them to create in the future, while the latter may disappoint them later in life. Choose your comments wisely.

Your comments can also encourage young artists to explain their ideas or processes: “Tell me about this part (pointing).” or “How did you do that?”
