Dick Van Dyke, 98, tied for oldest winner of 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Dick Van Dyke couldn’t be more excited to win another trophy at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy Awards!

The 98-year-old won the Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded) award for his 98th birthday special on Saturday, September 7, Dick Van Dyke ’98 Magic. CBS aired a two-hour tribute special featuring archival footage from Van Dyke’s storied career and a live performance of the song, which aired in December.

Later in the press conference room, Van Dijk was so excited that he kept telling reporters that he “can’t believe it.” He then proudly declared, “I’m probably the oldest Emmy winner,” with Arlene pointing out that Lear was the first to hold that title.

When asked what advice he would like to give to the next generation of talent, Van Dijk told reporters, “You have to keep at it. You’re going to go through hard times and a lot of auditions… but you have to if you believe in yourself , then stick to it and believe you can do it, this is very important.

“I don’t know how I did it!” he added jokingly.

As for what legacy he wants to leave behind, Van Dyke said he wants people to remember his “laughter” and “making people laugh for 75 years.”

“I’ve been in this business for 75 years. I can’t believe I’m still here performing,” he said, before quipping, “If anyone’s looking for a job, I’m looking for a job!”

Van Dyke, who previously spoke to People about his two-hour tribute special, recalled thinking: “‘I don’t deserve this.'”

“It’s hard to put into words how I feel,” he said. “I came home and I said, ‘You know what? It’s going to be a few days before people really understand what happened.’ I never thought I would get recognition like this. I didn’t realize I was in show business.” So much done in 75 years.

The legendary actor’s historic win at the Daytime Emmys comes just three months after his win at the Creative Arts Emmys.
