TikTok Star offers new solutions to gun violence in America

One of the always hot-button issues in America is the gun issue. While a majority of Americans support stricter gun laws, including universal background checks, there appears to be no political will to continue increasing regulations and restrictions on guns. But TikTok star Ryann (who posts as @ryannpdatsme) offers a novel solution to this fraught topic: gun insurance.

“I don’t say this often, but I think insurance companies need to be involved,” she said. “In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever said anything like this in my life, but … it depends on the insurance company.”

In its own way, this makes sense. She explained…

“Call me radical, but I think guns should start having insurance. … If I have to insure my Honda Civic, you need to insure your gun. Like anything of value in this life, your Health, your cell phone, your house, your car, you can insure them all. If your guns are valuable to you, insuring them shouldn’t be a problem, baby. You can’t buy a gun without it. You can’t take it anywhere without showing proof of your fucking insurance. If someone does something stupid with a gun, guess who’s going to pay for it. The cost? Insurance companies; this will soon regulate some things.

She further elaborated on her point, which I illustrate using the metaphor of someone harming themselves on her property. “If you’re in my house and you fall off my roof, that’s on my home insurance policy, right? If you play with my gun and shoot someone, that’s on my firearms policy It’s on the insurance policy, right?

Then she shamelessly added: “Asshole, I’m not letting anyone have my damn gun. Oh my god, no: I paid this asshole’s insurance.

TikTok commenters mostly praised the novel approach, with @evlburn23 agreeing “I think it should be like cars. Insurance, safety classes and classes. Guns are divided into classes, e.g….Class C shotgun, Class B pistol, A Class semi-automatic gun.

“As an owner [a gun]I agree,” said @hail_seitan013. “This is a responsible and reasonable solution. You are right, insurance companies will lobby for legislation when it affects their bottom line.

“This is by far the best system I’ve ever heard of,” @_vierrr_ exclaimed. “We own mantises mainly for hunting but also for self-defense. We are responsible owners but we agree that some things need to be stepped up. I like this.

Others are skeptical. “They already have it,” @vinnietodd1 replied. “But just like car insurance or any other insurance, not everyone has it, and I’m pretty sure criminals won’t be fined for not having it.” (A follow-up comment, however, refuted this claim, noting that no guns Getting caught without insurance is different from getting caught without compulsory insurance such as car insurance, which will result in penalties).

No solution is ironclad, but it seems like a good place to start…and the vast majority of Americans think we need to start somewhere soon.
