Football season is just around the corner and many of us have lost our buddies on our television screens. When the first game of the season arrives, everything else becomes a secondary priority— god forbid Do you want to spend a cozy fall Monday night watching this gilmore girls Replay.
For one couple, football season, and most importantly, dad’s fantasy football drafts, coincidentally coincides with the birth of their first child.
Pattsy Housely and Justin Alvarez told People they learned they were pregnant in 2023, and Justin quickly realized the implications of her due date.
“When we found out about her due date (September 3), he mentioned that she would be born during football and boating season,” Housley said. “He wanted to know if the hospital was covering the game, just in case she was born more than a week late. I also like football, so I was curious too.”
The couple tried their best to make Alvarez’s fantasy football schedule and baby’s birth go smoothly, but the baby had other plans and they welcomed baby Elsie a day late and just a few days away from Justin’s fantasy draft Hour.
“He and his friends scheduled the show weeks and months in advance,” Housley explained. “It was originally scheduled for September 5th, two days after my due date. We always thought she would come early, so Wouldn’t that be a problem, but she was born on September 4th – about 12 hours before the draft.
This unexpected conflict led Alvarez to set up his recruiting headquarters in the ward. More than a year later this month, Housley posted a TikTok revealing that he was, in fact, entering the draft. The video has since been viewed 814,000 times.
Housley assured people that Alvarez remained an attentive father throughout the draft process and posted the video because she thought people would get a laugh out of his multitasking.
She also shared that his draft went well, with him selecting Jalen Hurts, DK Metcalf and Stefon Diggs.
Jalen Hurts does have a much higher completion rate than baby Elsie, so it does seem worth it in the end.
The couple said they liked people’s reactions, even though they were inconsistent.
“I know men appreciate it and think it’s funny. Men definitely come up with the funniest comments! Women don’t appreciate it,” Housley said with a laugh.
Comments on Housely’s TikTok are divided. Some users shared their accounts and even praised Alvarez’s multitasking abilities.
“As a nurse helped me in my wheelchair to our new room, my husband was holding our baby in one arm and his laptop in the other, frantically trying to put his last option on the table. Go in so people in the lobby don’t see 😂,” one user shared.
“This is an amazing husband and father. He has been able to multitask.
Others were less impressed.
“‘Yes, divorce happens out of nowhere’🧐,” one user joked.
Personally, I don’t think I would be too happy with my partner’s distraction in this situation, but I’m not a sporty girl. Football does seem to be a big part of Housley and Alvarez’s new family life, so I can imagine a little draft in the delivery room might not be a problem for them.
“We still hugged each other and watched football games on Sundays and throughout the week,” Housley said. “That’s probably my favorite thing! Meeting her dad, [Elsie] I have no choice but to be a die-hard fan for life.
