Teachers tell mom they don’t have time to teach kids to tie their shoes

There is a lot to learn in primary school. Teaching children how to live can be overwhelming. Thankfully, we have teachers to help us with a lot of things — but, one teacher on TikTok believes that some things are just the responsibility of parents.

Former teacher @fitpeanut shared a screenshot of a video a mother posted on the platform showing her controversial request.

In the screenshot, the mom wrote a note on her child’s teacher’s agenda, asking: “Can you guys tie his shoes? I don’t want him to fall.

The teacher responded to the note, writing, “I’m sorry we can’t do this. We only have time to teach the standards.

The mom captioned the video: “Wow, any suggestions or comments? He’s only in first grade.

Look, no one wants kids tripping in the school hallways. However, there are some solutions to this problem No Allow teachers to take time away from others in the classroom.

“Here’s the thing,” @fitpeanut said on TikTok. “By the age of six, your child should know how to tie his shoes. If not, buy him a pair of Velcro sneakers.

Better point…

“Secondly, your teacher doesn’t have time to tie students’ shoes,” she continued. “She had 20 to 25 kids in her class. She was trying to teach the curriculum, manage some behaviors, support and accommodate students with individualized education plans, but there weren’t enough hours in the day for the teacher to do everything she had to do.

Teachers must deal with many inevitable challenges. But parents can help them solve this completely avoidable problem, whether it’s teaching their kids how to tie their shoes at home or letting them wear shoes without laces.

“Your teacher doesn’t even get a chance to pee, let alone tie your kids and everyone else’s shoes,” @fitpeanut said. “Please prepare your children.”

The comments section mostly agrees that it’s not the teacher’s responsibility, even though tying shoes is indeed a difficult skill for some kids to master.

“In kindergarten we add this to the bottom of the supplies… For safety reasons, if your child doesn’t know how to tie their shoes, give them Velcro shoes. It’s impossible to tie shoes for every child.

“My daughter is in first grade and she hasn’t learned to tie yet, so I wear Devil’s Felt Shoes to school and don’t need to add stress to her day or the teacher because she has enough to do!” shared another.

Users also sympathized with the mother and said the standard of life skills children should know should be made clearer to parents.

“At my child’s preschool, the administrator sat down with every parent who came in and made us sign a contract saying we understood that as parents we had a responsibility to teach them basic life skills, etc.,” one user said.

No one is saying parents should start hosting shoe-tying camps for 5-year-olds. But it’s also a high expectation for you, an elementary school teacher who may be overworked and overwhelmed. So if tying shoes isn’t possible, Devil’s Felt may be the best option for your child.
