I remember as a kid sitting on my mom’s bed with my feet dangling over the edge while she put on her makeup in the mirror. It wasn’t until I got older that I was allowed to do my own makeup, except for cakey dance ~looks~, but I’m guilty of trying (and failing) to apply winged eyeliner on myself without supervision.
Children absorb everything we say, and makeup can be a touchy subject. You don’t want to ruin the innocent fun because it able You’ll have fun pretending to be a princess or a Hollywood star in your mom’s makeup bag. But you also don’t want to hurt your child’s self-esteem or make them feel like this is necessary to look and feel good.
Maggie Katz shared how she’s creating a more positive conversation around makeup in an adorable exchange with her little girl on TikTok.
In the video, Katz and his daughter are putting on makeup together in front of a mirror. Katz told her, “You look beautiful.”
“I’ll do your makeup with you!” her daughter said (how cute).
“So why do we wear makeup?” Katz asked.
“Because it’s fun and we look beautiful,” she continued. “But are we beautiful anyway?”
Her daughter responded with an enthusiastic “yes.”
Katz explained in the comments that this mentality applies not just to makeup, but to girls as well.
“I also have a son (who is a few years older) and this definitely suits him as well,” she said. “I’m always trying to remind him that we find beauty everywhere and that everyone is special in their own way.”
TikTok users shared their love for Katz’s “weird” strategy in the comments.
“I’ve been trying to figure out how to explain why I do certain things to my girls without convincing them that they ‘need’ to do it. This is awesome. 🙏🏻” said one user.
Some users shared other ways they’ve rephrased their negative self-talk to make it better, such as replacing clothes that are “too small.”
“In between, my brain is being rewired when pants get too small,” the user shared.
Many also said they wished they had heard more of Katz’s kind words when they were growing up.
“I needed this as a kid🥲,” one user said.
“My mom used to say, ‘You go out without makeup? Just put on some mascara and you’ll look beautiful!’ I was 12 years old,” another user shared.
“Well, let me tell you now,” Katz replied. “You are beautiful as you are.”
