Baby name inspiration comes from all over, but there’s nothing sweeter than watching a comforting movie and thinking, “Hey, that’s a great baby name.” Sure, you can google “vintage baby names” as well as unique nicknames and unisex names, but I also think you can find all of these categories under one umbrella – John Hughes movie baby names.
Consider Hughes’ films – e.g. Pretty in Pink, Home Alone, Beethovento name a few – created in the ’80s and ’90s, it makes sense that baby names inspired by his movies would feel retro and classic. But all of them also have an incredibly unique vibe, like Ferris, Maizy or Ryce. Even more common character names like Emily or Neil have fallen out of popularity over the years and are now more unique than some other baby names. When choosing some baby names inspired by John Hughes movies, I also noticed that many of his characters have short and fun names like Ferris or Del, and this punchy name choice is really cool and versatile.
So if John Hughes movies are already a comfort choice for you, why not get inspired by them when naming your own baby?
01Samantha
“I can’t believe it. They forgot my fucking birthday. sixteen candlesMolly Ringwald stars as Samantha Baker. It’s a personal favorite of mine and I watch it every year around my birthday, but even without that connection, Samantha is a great baby name to get inspiration from. In John Hughes’ universe, Samantha is strong, smart, independent, and a very good friend.
02miles
uncle buck is a John Hughes classic starring John Candy as an uncle who must take over from Mr. Mom for a few days, and Macaulay Culkin as his nephew Miles. Miles is a curious, funny, and lovable character, but this name is also a great short, energetic choice for those who want something a little more unique than Liam.
03Andrew
You don’t have to actually like or relate to Emilio Estevez’s character in “Andrew.” breakfast clubbut if you want a classic name, this is it. It means “manly,” “brave,” or “brave,” making it a great name with a retro vibe.
04Ferris
I mean, come on. If you named your kid Ferris, people would definitely think you were a Ferris fan ferris bueller’s day off Like, who isn’t? The movie is an absolute classic, and Ferris was a very unique choice, so you get a lot of baby name points there.

To be fair, Cameron is actually the better of the Ferris/Cameron duo in the movie, so feel free to name your kid that as well. It’s a great gender-neutral choice and Cam is the sweetest nickname.
06Emily
the moment i realized Beethoven It was also done by John Hughes, and I realized why I liked it so much. Emily is the little sister in the movie—the one who falls into the swimming pool and is rescued by Beethoven—and when I was a child I was always struck by her talent at the piano. Emily is another classic name, but you don’t hear it on babies anymore. It means “rival” or “desire”.
07Maizie
Like her brother Miles, Maze was a huge fan of hers when her Uncle Buck came to babysit them for a few days, and I was a huge fan of her name. With its fun little spelling, it’s especially unique and has a sweet and lively vibe.
08Claire
Another character from Molly Ringwald (apparently she worked well with John Hughes), Claire is the “princess” in The Princess. breakfast clubbut like all Hughes films, you soon realize there’s more to her than just a superficial character. The name Claire also means “bright, clear”, which makes you feel a little sad when you think about it.
09Jack
Jack Ryan? Oh, unique. Jack is a heartthrob sixteen candles While some of his choices throughout the movie are questionable, he does give our girl Sam a wonderful birthday. I love the name Jack, and you can just skip Jacob and go straight to this fun nickname.
10Rice
I’ve always liked the name Rice Beethovenbut the big sister character is definitely worth naming your child, even if she doesn’t have such a cool name.
11Neil
Planes, trains and automobiles Thanksgiving movies are often a tradition for families, so why not pay tribute by naming your child Neil? This is another name you don’t hear often, and the character Neil is such a good egg.
12of
John Candy character Planes, trains and automobilesDel is a very interesting baby name choice. I totally believe this could be suitable for boys or girls, and I love the short and sweet side of it.
13Andy
Well, we have to include another Molly Ringwald classic – Pretty in pink. I think John Hughes liked to give his characters short, energetic names, and Andy was definitely one of them. This is a really fun choice for a baby, and I love the spelling – whether it’s a shortened version of a name like Andrea, or a name on its own.
14Duck
So Duckie is technically a nickname Pretty in pinkbut if you’re a big John Hughes fan, why not use it? This is a really fun, unique option that you can obviously use for a little boy or girl.
John Hughes was an incredible storyteller, and giving your baby a name from his universe feels perfect. Choose your favorite, watch the movie and give yourself all the warm feelings.
