Growing up, I wasn’t a Barbie girl – I was a Transformers girl. In fact, the Barbies I owned were mostly used as part of elaborate imaginary kidnapping plots in which my favorite action figures swooped in to the rescue. So when I heard about the animated prequel Transformers OneI can’t wait for an excuse to introduce my kids to all the Transformers lore I learned from my childhood. Now that I’ve finished watching the movie, I can’t wait to see the follow-up.
I’m not the only one either. After speaking with stars Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry, who play the protagonists Orion Pax and D-16 respectively, it’s clear that they’re definitely going to keep it going A new branch of tradition.
So if you’re still on the fence about taking your family to the cinema to see this movie, here are five reasons to help convince you.
1. It works regardless of the scope of your followers.
Granted, my experience with the Transformers universe is largely limited to my childhood memories and the 2007 live-action movie Transformers Movie starring Megan Fox. My husband, on the other hand, has watched every version of Transformers content over the years, and my kids are still new to the fandom. we all loved Transformers One.
When asked if his children were fans before he took on the role, Hemsworth revealed that he didn’t even know they were fans. “You realize that in the universe, whether you’re an avid fan or not, everyone knows these characters and there’s some overarching connection,” he told Horror Mom. “The kid in me is excited to play with these action figures and watch cartoons, but I’m also excited to bring my kids along for the ride.”
2. This is a movie that will make you fall in love with watching movies all over again.
I’m not sure what I expected from this movie, but I was blown away by the animation. Feeling completely immersed (think Star Wars-esque) – the kind of thing you’d expect to see on a giant screen, because it’s pretty much the closest you’ll get to watching a 3D movie, but it’s not actually 3D.
I suspect this is a movie where you’ll discover something new every time you watch it.
3. Character development is a *chef’s kiss.
Anyone familiar with the Transformers world is aware of the rivalry between Optimus Prime and Megatron. What we see here are those iconic characters as they once were: lone Cybertronian miner Orion Parks (Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry), who are best friends who feel deprived of their station in life and end up embarking on a dangerous adventure that ultimately leads to the liberation of the miners…and the enactment of the Transformers saga that fans know and love.
The prospect of bringing out Megatron’s humanity really appealed to Henry. “I’ve always been and still am fascinated by villain stories. I’ve always wanted to uncover that because I’m like, ‘Why are they so mean? Why do people go ‘boo’ when they see them? Villains create such things out of people. Something that comes from the heart, and it’s usually always negative,” he said. “So, for me, when I got the opportunity to play Megatron — and not just Megatron, but where he started, D-16 — it gave me an opportunity to really dissect it and figure it out. Know what it is. At the end of the day, it’s heart. Where is his heart? … I’m really just trying to figure out who he is and what he cares about.
4. How interesting!
see Transformers One In a packed theater, one thing was for sure: it had plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. You’ll soon discover that many of these are provided by a droid named B-127, or, if you ask the droid himself, “Badassatron.” Those familiar with the Transformers story may immediately recognize the character played by Keegan Michael Key, the fan-favorite Bumblebee.
5. A follow-up movie seemed like a no-brainer.
Why not get on the ground and watch now so you don’t have to catch up later? Hemsworth and Henry are already looking toward the future of the series, and who could all join the impressive voice cast — in addition to the aforementioned Key, on-screen Elita -1), Laurence Fishburne (Alpha Trion) also joined their ranks.
What other celebrities could make excellent new members? Transformers family?
“Cate Blanchett,” Hemsworth explained, “because I love her because she can do things with her heart and she can act and she’s also funny and cheeky. So, I wanted to see her play someone A comedic, fun character. Henry was keen to give Angela Bassett a voice: “She has to do it. Come on. When those sexy tones come in… we need more women in Transformers. We just have to do it.” Need more. What if both women turned into Transformers? “Game over,” Hemsworth and Henry agreed.
