I come from a long line of hoarders. Like, you could barely move in my aunt’s house because you’d have a bunch of Time magazines from the ’70s. The same goes for my parents (mainly my dad), who kept his lunch box and every baseball cap he ever bought since he was a kid.
On the other hand, I always wanted to get away from everything. I often throw away my daughter’s gadgets (things she doesn’t play with) or sell them on Facebook Marketplace. The chaos overwhelmed me. I’m sure my therapist can fix all of this, but in the meantime, one mom on TikTok is hoping everyone takes a leaf out of this book and gets their annual house cleaning done ASAP!
It may be hard at first, but once it all goes away, you’ll feel so free!
“It’s that time of year again. I mean, it’s time for me to go into an absolute spiral and clean out everything in my house while no one is looking,” Mallory Sholar joked in her TikTok.
“Because every year right before Christmas, I sink into utter anxiety just thinking about all the stuff my kids are about to receive and the things they’re about to bring into my home.” Related!
She then showed footage of herself filling her car with all kinds of fun stuff that was either thrown into the dump or sent to a resale shop. She also killed two birds with one stone, because in order to load all the cleaned items into her car, she had to clean it first.
“To make room for all these donations, I have to take out all the trash in my car that I’ve been living there for free,” she noted before laying out the rules for cleanup.
“If it hasn’t been worn, if it hasn’t been played with, if it’s been sitting there waiting for me to find a place for it and I still haven’t found a place for it, then it’s gone,” she said.
“I don’t care if you think you’re going to wear that jacket you’ve had for 12 years, if I didn’t see you wearing it last year, it’s gone. If we have a new, better version, whatever it is , it will also disappear.
One important thing to note about Malorie’s purge: she does most of it behind her family’s back—and for good reason! Have you ever tried cleaning up toys or clothes with your children? Forget it! That doll, truck, or game they haven’t played with in months is now suddenly their favorite toy as soon as they see it in the donation basket.
“If anyone in my family asks me where something is, I play dumb. It’s so weird that you can’t find a thing that you have zero interest in,” she joked sarcastically.
“At the same time, I feel like I’ve lost 50 pounds.”
TikTok users love Sholar’s DGAF attitude.
“Yeah girl! I’ve already picked up four full bags and it doesn’t look any different. I need to do a few more things this weekend😅,” one user said.
OP replied: “I took so much and immediately came home and thought well guess what the whole house has to go too 😅😂”
