Holiday Decorating Is Better Than Prozac

I’m a little late to the holiday decorating game; we’re already a week into December and I’m frantically rummaging through my attic looking for all the boxes I swear I labeled last year. But that’s no surprise, because with four kids, a dog, the changing seasons and some predictable family ailments, life always feels chaotic and stressful this time of year.

I find myself feeling sluggish and irritable—often thinking about the long winter ahead, darkness arriving early, and my kids being stuck at home for long periods of time, debating screen time and toy preferences. But as I walked down from the attic with the last box and began unpacking each of the beautiful holiday items, I quickly realized that my mood was about to change. Because there’s one #hottake mountain I’d die on, and that’s it Holiday Decorating Is Better Than Prozac.

Of course, I’m not a doctor, and I’m certainly not trying to minimize any real mental health issues (some of which I do have), but I’m living proof that with a few sequined nutcrackers, some twinkling lights, and a set Rainbow colored stuff. It instantly transformed my house from a dark, dreary prison into a happy, sparkling wonderland. I can’t help but feel a little happy when I’m surrounded by so much color and glitz.

I’m not talking about traditional holiday decorations. I mean, I’m not against it, but I can’t guarantee its effectiveness. So greenery, plaid patterns, retro Christmas village scenes and pig carols – these probably won’t work. I’m talking about walking down Target’s bright, loud, sparkling holiday aisles and filling your shopping cart. I’m talking about accenting greens and reds with hot pink, lots of metallics, a handful of glitter, and tinsel (lots of tinsel).

Don’t be afraid to grab something that requires batteries. Some glowing signs and an oversized singing snowball might sound like a headache at other times, but in December, it somehow becomes a headache. There are fewer nails on the blackboard and more let’s get this party started. If you don’t believe me, just give it a try.

I dare you to have your mantle piled high with festive accessories and feel outraged. I dare you to be pissed off with your shelves filled with feathery trees and gilded reindeer. I mean, if you have kids and are breathing, you’re bound to feel a little stressed and frustrated throughout the season, but I swear, decorating lightens the overall mood. I wouldn’t call it science; it is science. Maybe a Christmas miracle.

So this season if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the chaos of life, kids, and the holidays, it’s not too late. You can also give yourself the gift of a little peace and joy by adding some holiday decorations to your home that may seem tacky but are actually incredible. Just think, maybe you could save some money on treatments by adding a little sparkle. After all, it’s the season of joy.
