Friends, I was shocked. Shocked. This is about Rudolph. You know: the red-nosed reindeer. My entire childhood seemed like a lie. Maybe yours too! This heartbreaking turn of events came to my attention via TikTok when children’s independent artist Darelle London (@darrellondon) posed a question…
“I have a question for Millennials: You know, when we were growing up, we would sing ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,’ and then we would add a little bit — ‘Like a lightbulb!’ — between the lines. Those little things? So in the end, at my school, we would say “You’re going to go down in history like…” – there were two options – “Just like the Blue Jays! ” or ‘Like the Yellow Pages!’
I was immediately devastated and vaguely felt like my Christmas was ruined because this wasn’t right! But there is more, so we have to keep trying.
“I was talking to my husband about this recently,” London continued, “and his school didn’t say that!”
Oh, thank God.
“They said, ‘Be like Columbus!'”
Dead. I’m dead. This is a ghost talking to you.
Anyway. London said the conversation made her realize each school might have a different little addition to “Rudolph,” and she wanted to know what others had to say.
You’re not ready for the answer…
First, the good news: the most common answer in the comments (one of the top few, actually) was “like George Washington.”
“I didn’t know anyone had ever sung anything other than ‘Like George Washington,’ so this blew my mind,” one reads. As hard as.
But alas, London does seem to be doing something about it, and it turns out there are plenty of options. Here are some of the things mentioned At least twice…
“Just like Columbus!”
“Like Lincoln”
“Just like Wayne Gretzky!”
“It’s like Monopoly!”
“Just like Pinocchio!”
I thought the last two were interesting because other places in the song referenced where I came from with Monopoly and Pinocchio. So are these lazy kids repeating material? Bad form.
“Just like Shakespeare!”
“Like flint!”
Well, that’s really smart.
“Like a dinosaur!”
“Just like Napoleon!”
“Just like page 43!”
This is obviously an Australian thing. Several people have said this. I…have no idea what that is.
“Just like Mickey Mouse!”
“Just like Yogi Bear!”
“Like toothpaste!”
So there you have it: Millennials in all their diverse, possibly regional glory. We are big and we have a lot of people.
