Spoiler warning: This article contains spoilers for episodes 11 and 12 love is blindSeason 7.
love is blind is the only dating reality show I actually enjoy, and it’s safe to say that watching the drama of people falling in love with someone they’ve never met (and then figuring out whether they want to marry them) is deeply entertaining. No one can say they watch these reality shows because they just want to see love, but some dramas hit a little too close to home — like Rameses and Marisa’s breakup love is blind Season seven.
Marissa and Ramses are one of those couples you really root for. After giving up contact with Bohdan before Ramses proposed, it felt like Marissa and Ramses were a done deal. The physical attraction is definitely there, and they both seem spiritual and progressive, moving through life with a beautiful worldview.
And then…okay. Ramesses showed his true face. After Marissa made a complete asshole about her previous military service, and then had the audacity to suggest that taking off birth control and switching to condoms for sex would make their sex life less pleasurable, no one but Marissa Really feel good about Ramses. This woman remained completely committed to her man and was willing to fight for him and their relationship until episode 11 ended on a cliffhanger…the two officially broke up in the first few minutes of episode 12.
That’s where I broke down too.
Ramses often beat around the bush, but our girl Marissa was always there for him. She wanted to know exactly why he thought their love was not enough for marriage, noting that he feared the second marriage would end and considered divorce a risk. any marriage. But Rameses eventually broke down and gave her a true answer: it was “her energy.” Marisa’s essence, everything within her, ultimately becomes who she is – the part that Ramses couldn’t imagine being together forever.
It’s devastating.
Look, Ramses is a piece of shit, but of course everyone should resonate with their partner’s energy. Not everyone works well with a loud, energetic person, and not everyone wants a quiet, stoic person. It doesn’t matter. But when the whole purpose of the experiment is to fall in love with someone for who they are—to fall in love with someone who has zero defenses, as Marissa has been doing in the pod—it feels a bit like a slap in the face. The energy your partner gives you just a few days before the wedding is fun, but it won’t last long.
Breakups are always hard to watch on reality TV, but Marissa’s broken heart was so real that it left me gasping and clutching my hands to my chest.
Aren’t we all Marissa? We’ve all felt loved, appreciated, and cared for by our partners, only to be told we were taking it too far. We’ve all let our guard down, decided to let the silliest parts of ourselves shine, and feel our own light burn when someone says they need to take a step back.
Season 7 love is blind Filled with fun, interesting, smart, kind women (not you, Hannah, sorry) and absolutely sub-par men, but none sadder than Marissa’s broken heart. Even in the pod, she mentioned her energy and what it was like to be with her, sharing real-life love stories from her past in which she was too much for other people, or in which she’d heard before, and started out with She was fun to be around, but they just couldn’t see the long-term development of it. So, does this all happen at the end, when she thinks Ramses is ready to love her all? coin. “I just wish someone could identify me,” she cried. “I just want someone to choose me.”
Oh, Marissa. you are not alone. We choose you again and again.
