Miranda Lambert’s upcoming album features songs written by someone very special: her husband Brendan McLoughlin!
Lambert is about to release her latest record, Postcards from TexasSeptember 13th.
In a new interview on the Bunnie Xo podcast stupid blondeLambert, 40, spoke about bringing McLaughlin, 32, into her creative process, explaining that they started improvising together during the coronavirus lockdown.
“Everyone was at home and bored, and I’m a songwriter, so I thought, ‘Let’s write songs!’ So he said, ‘I don’t know how to write songs,'” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Yeah, you can, you can do it.'” So I got out my guitar and we started writing, and he was really good. Like he had some really good lines. I mean, he’s had enough of a life as a New York cop to like have some good lines here.
The “If I Were a Cowboy” singer said she and McLaughlin, who married in January 2019, wrote about four or five “little tunes” together, which was enough to give McLaughlin a confidence boost. Soon after, he was bragging to their friend Jesse Frasure about how “easy” writing was—so Frasure dragged him into a four-and-a-half-hour writing session.
The three-time Grammy winner said McLaughlin quickly realized that songwriting was no easy task. But when Lambert started researching Postcards from Texasher co-producer Jon Randall realized maybe they could get McLaughlin to work again.
“We started talking about leaving Sony and signing with a new record label, and really just talking about a situation that no longer works for you and moving on, how powerful a fire it lights inside of you,” Lambert said. Chat history with Randall. “Jon Randall is a friend of mine, but his name is actually Randy, so we always say to him, ‘Damn Randy.’ So we started writing this song, and Brendan was watching It kept coming up during the football game. I was like, ‘Are we doing this? In or out? You’re going to have to pick a side.
McLaughlin, a retired New York City police officer, opted in, and before long, he was sitting next to Randall and his wife. The session resulted in “Dammit Randy,” a song from Lambert’s new album due out in late July, along with “Alimony” and “Wranglers.”
“He wrote some of the greatest lyrics in the song,” she said. “It’s actually really special because the situation in which I wrote this song, Brendan was my husband, so he had to listen to me complain for so long and he knew the story better than I did, you know? So he Same sentiment as me, so I’m really proud of him.
When it came time to include “Dammit Randy” on the album, Lambert had a surprise in store for McLaughlin.
“I was like, ‘I want to play you something.’ So the whole band knew he wrote the song, so we were all staring at him and saying, ‘Push it,'” she recalled. “He wouldn’t say it, but his eyes were a little misty. He said, ‘You cut my song? That’s great. It’s one of my favorite songs on the record.
Lambert and McLaughlin tied the knot just three months after meeting on set good morning americashe was performing there and he was doing security there.
In May, she told People magazine that one of the couple’s main rules is “communication.”
“We just speak out, no matter what it is, we talk about everything,” Lambert said. “I think communication is so important, especially as women, we want men to know what we’re thinking, but they don’t. We have to tell them.
