The second arrest was related to the 2012 death of a retired Indiana farmer.
Nearly 12 years after 85-year-old Lowell R. Badger was found dead on the bedroom floor of his rural Sullivan County home on Dec. 8, 2012, 39-year-old Richard Richard D. Taft was arrested and charged in connection with the case, which involves murder and two counts of burglary resulting in bodily injury, Indiana State Police announced in a news release.
Taft was charged after detectives interviewed 58 witnesses, WTWO reported. Witnesses described Taft as “emotional” and “crying” in the months after Badger’s murder, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the outlet and reviewed by People. Although he denied his involvement to law enforcement, witnesses claimed he had a different version of the case.
People’s review of Indiana Department of Corrections online records shows Taft was convicted of conspiracy/dealing in methamphetamine and is serving time in an Indiana prison. His current expected release date is 2031.
His latest charges come three months after a grand jury indicted William Ray Grimes in Badger’s death. Indiana State Police previously announced that Grimes was charged with murder, burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary in April after six days of evidence and testimony.
“This is the beginning of criminal proceedings. We again encourage anyone with information relevant to Mr. Badger’s murder to contact the Indiana State Police,” Special Prosecutor Rob Roberts said in a statement at the time.
Indiana State Police previously announced that Badger “succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during a burglary.”
“Taken during the burglary was a Lowell safe, light to medium dark gray, 23 1/2 high, 17 inches deep, 17 inches wide, in original condition, manufactured by John D. Brush and Company. (Photo is A similar safe; Mr. Badger’s safe is in original condition.
