You know you love it—those body shakes, carpet tears, your dog’s uncontrollable excitement when you take a bath, take a trip outside in the cold, or get home after a long day. But why exactly do dogs get zooms? It’s a funny habit, getting so excited about something that the only way to deal with it is to run around until they’re out of breath. We asked one veterinarian why dogs zoom in, what’s the purpose of it, and whether they enjoy zooming in as much as they seem.
Why Do Dogs Get Zoom?
“There are many reasons why dogs develop Zoomies. Typically, it can be caused by excess energy, boredom, happiness, pent-up energy, or relief from stress,” said Dr. said veterinarian Dr. Carly Fox.
Fox said her puppy tends to get zoomed after she lets him out of his overnight crate. You may have noticed that certain times of day or habits cause your dog to start running as well. Why do they always have to kick up their heels after a bowel movement, a bath, or a walk?
“They often enlarge after bathing or having a bowel movement to release pent-up energy or stress,” Fox said. “Plus, since baths and walks are part of their daily routine, Zoomies give them the freedom to celebrate what they’ve accomplished.” If you’ve ever completed a work task and felt the need to Zoom, you can probably relate.
Are Zoomies good for dogs?
It’s good to relieve stress, right? The same goes for burning pent-up energy, at least for humans. Yes, the same goes for our canine companions.
“If you’ve ever seen a dog hanging out with Zoomies, it’s sure to make them very happy and good for them! Of course, make sure they’re in a place where they can’t hurt themselves or others or come across any sharp or dangerous objects. ,” Fox suggested.
In fact, she said, zooming has been observed in a variety of animals, from cats and hamsters to exotic animals in zoos and the wild. So it stands to reason that zooming is an instinctive way for animals to release extra excitement or stress.
