Yoto Mini speakers are being voluntarily recalled because their lithium-ion batteries may overheat and catch fire, posing burn and fire hazards to consumers, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The popular children’s music and storytelling device has received six reports from U.S. consumers and one from a British consumer that the speakers overheated or melted, the agency said.
More than 250,000 speakers marketed to children have been recalled due to fire risks.
There were no reports of injuries.
The speaker is marketed to children ages 3 to 12 and is designed to play audiobooks, music, radio and podcasts using a Yoto card.
The model name Yoto Mini, SKU PRPLXX00860 and serial number are located on the base of the product. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the recalled Yoto Mini was sold with a charging cable but no adapter or charger.
The affected items were sold online at us.yotoplay.com, Amazon.com, Target.com and maisonette.com and in toy and gift stores nationwide between November 2021 and April 2024 for approximately $70 .
“Customer safety is our top priority and it is important to us that our products meet our high standards,” the company said on its recall website.
If you recall, the company originally recalled more than 251,000 Yoto Minis in April 2024 because the lithium-ion batteries could overheat and catch fire, leading to the possibility of fires and burns.
It’s important to note that even if you contact the company in April 2024 and receive a free Yoto Mini smart cable, you’ll still need to take further action to ensure the safety of your Yoto Mini. The company is now offering a free battery replacement kit to anyone who owns a Yoto Mini produced between 2021 and 2023.
Yoto found that even after sending smart cables to customers, they still received additional reports of the product overheating. The company said its investigation found that the Yoto Mini can overheat when its battery is completely discharged, especially after it has not been used for an extended period of time.
If your child has a Yoto Mini, you should take it away from them and stop using it immediately.
Everyone who owns a Yoto Mini manufactured between 2021 and 2023 is eligible for a free battery replacement kit. You may even have received an email or contact via the Yoto app with instructions. This applies to customers who already received Smart Cables as part of the original recall.
To request a free battery replacement kit, visit the company’s dedicated recall website and follow the instructions. You will need the email address and serial number used to register the Yoto Mini.
